Android 1.6 mobile multiplayer host/connect guide request

Hello all, I am hoping someone knowledgeable about this game/update/multiplayer could help me. I bought the game today because of the mobile multiplayer because I wanted to play with a friend in another country. It's not possible to connect to eachothers farm even using a VPN. Any help is appreciated :)

For long-distance play I can recommend Zero Tier One or Nord VPN with "Meshnet" function (not an ad, both options are free). I think the second is the best and easiest.
There are tutorials on YouTube from MikoChan Plays that worked for me.
It is also important that the game version is the same for everyone.
